Fawn was born on a farm to Doe and Roman Sterling. Her mother died from complications during childbirth, and her father became reclusive and neglectful, turning his attention toward his duties as a pastor.
Her older siblings stepped up eagerly. Nathan taught her about the sky, the weather, birds, and their songs. Kaitlyn taught her stars and stories, reading to her at night. Sage gave her music, and some of her softest memories are of learning guitar beside him.
When Fawn was ten, Nathan tried to teach her how to swim. They both went under. Nathan did not come back up. After that, the house changed: Kaitlyn stopped going outside, Sage put down his guitar, and Fawn began to believe ruin followed wherever she stood.
